Trip to Bukit Chandu and Old Ford factory

Old Ford Factory-The Japanese Occupation forever changed people's outlook on the future of their country and its impact lasts to this present day. The memories and reflections of the hardships faced by those who lived through the darkest years of Singapore's modern history have been captured befittingly at the old Ford Motor Factory, site of the British surrender now preserved by the National Archives of Singapore as a permanent exhibition gallery – Memories at Old Ford Factory.

Bukit Chandu-
"When war broke out in the Far East, the Regiment was in process of expansion .... In consequence..like many other units of our Imperial Force, (it) was not fully prepared for the ordeal which it was to face. Nevertheless, these young and untried soldiers acquitted themselves in a way which bore comparison with the very best troops in Malaya. In particular, by their stubborn defence of the Pasir Panjang Ridge at the height of the Battle of Singapore, they set an example of steadfastness and endurance which will become a great tradition in the Regiment and an inspiration for future generations."

Major-General A.E. Percival From Foreword of 'The Malay Regiment 1933-1947' Written by Mubin C. Sheppard, first published in 1947

Total Defence Day

15th February is Total Defence Day. On this day in 1942, Singapore fell to the Japanese. Total Defence Day is commemorated every year on this date to remind Singapore of World War II and the key lessons learnt about defence:

Singapore is defensible and is worth defending.

We must ourselves defend Singapore. We cannot rely on others to defend our country.
