Personal Response 3 : Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease

Hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) is caused by the Coxsackie virus and Enterovirus 71. The throat and tonsils develop small ulcers while the hands, feet, and diaper area are affected by a rash with characteristic vesicles (very small blisters). This is usually a mild illness with the rash healing in 5 to 7 days. We can tell that our friends have HFMD by seeing the following symptoms:
1)fever
2)sore throat
3)ulcers in the throat, mouth and tongue
4)headache
5) a rash with vesicles (small blisters, 3-7 mm) on hands, feet and diaper area. The
vesicles are typically on the palm side of the hands the sole side of the feet and very
charateristics in appearance
6)loss of appetite

It is not true that HFMD only occurs among young children below five years, adults can also be affected but children under five years are particulary susceptible. We should tell our parents if we have any symptoms of HFMD so that they can bring us to the doctor.I do not know anyone who contracted this disease. They should stay away from school, stay away from public places like restaurants, playgrounds and shopping centres.I would advise them to wash their hands before eating any food.
